Nine wet days on the Bryggen wharf, drawing between showers under a borrowed umbrella.

My first trip where I gave myself a week in one place instead of a day in six. It rained on eight of the nine days, which turned out to be the point: the wooden gables go soft and dark, the harbor turns the color of the sky, and the whole town becomes two washes and a line.

I learned here that a sketchbook you are afraid to ruin is useless. Half of these pages have water damage along the gutter and they are better for it.
